TRANSWORLD SKATEBOARDING - Ray Stevens II

EXECUTIONER - HELLBOUND (reunion show limited release)

This nine track delight features the Campbell, California hardcore band, Executioner.  If you've been paying attention, you will realize that Campbell is the home of Lars Fredricksen of Rancid.  This is the stuff li'l Lars grew up listening to some twenty years ago. The band had a gritty UK punk sound complete with the spiked hair, leather, studs, bandanas, and skateboards.  Executioner recently united for a punk reunion gig in nearby San Jose, playing with Ribsy, Grim Reality, The Boneshavers, The Faction, and Los Olvidados.  The crustiest of the crust were there to witness this reunion, and Executioner delivered the goods.  This CD rocks after all this time and can be yours if you go to slackertone.com

Live review from ZERO MAGAZINE

Lust For Life: A Reunion of the San Jose Punk Scene 1980 - 1989
The Blank Club
September 17th & 18th

In the late 1970s and 1980s, San Jose had a thriving punk scene that rivaled that of L.A. and Orange County. With bands such as the Unaware, Los Olvidados, Ribzy, Executioner, the Faction, Whipping Boy, Frontline and Grim reality to name a few, the South Bay was an important part of the Western Front. On the weekend of September 17th & 18th, seven of these local legends gathered for a 20th reunion show at the Blank Club, located at ground zero.

Coordinated by SideOneDummy Record’s honcho and Zero Magazine’s own Larry Trujillo, the event bought together former SJ punk scenesters from as far away as Norway and Germany. Friday featured Ribzy, Executioner and Frontline (Sib’s band). All three bands turned in mouth-dropping sets but the standout had to have been Executioner who hadn’t performed together in two decades. Led by frontman Dave Burks and guitarist Normal, the band ripped though numbers as if they had played only yesterday.

Saturday night kicked off with just as much anticipation as Friday. The headliner for Saturday was Los Olvidados -- the band that epitomizes the early punk era. Doing a mixture of los O and Drunk Injuns tunes (as a homage to Injuns’ frontman MoFo who couldn’t make the show), they closed with a very powerful rendition of Iggy’s “Be Your dog” that bought tears to the eyes of many reunioners.

The Boneshavers opened with a sizzling set that set the energy level for the evening followed by solid performances by Grim Reality and San Jose’s most well known punk legends, the Faction. The sentiment oozed throughout both nights and this was the first time many of these people had seen each other in years and most people seemed to feel that it might be their last time as well. If this turns out to be the case, let it be known that the San Jose Punk Reunion allowed these people the chance to go out with one last big bang.
